Air conditioning systems are more than just a way to cool down your home. Understanding how they work can help you identify issues before it becomes too late to help you save money on needed repairs or a full AC replacement! Let’s take a look at these critical components. We’ll explain how compressors and condensers help keep your home at just the right temperature, so you’re not constantly adjusting settings to find relief from the overwhelming heat.

To explain the difference, let’s briefly discuss how an air conditioner works. The heat from your house goes into a circuit connected by tubes full of refrigerant. The refrigerant is transformed and distributed between gas and liquid, then carried either outside where heat is released or indoors where cool air is released. There are three major parts: the compressor, the condenser, and the evaporator.

Now, let’s take a deeper dive into the two main parts.

What is an A/C Compressor?

The compressor is the “heart and soul” of the system, connecting the evaporator to the outside condenser. The compressor is the system that releases the heat from inside your home. It transforms the refrigerant into higher pressure and temperature gases by tightly packing molecules together at high temperatures before releasing this energy as warm air through an outdoor unit.

What is an A/C Condenser?

The condenser is the big air conditioning box that sits outside your home. It has two primary functions- to transfer heat in the summer or collect it from surrounding areas during winter. The refrigerant leaves the condenser. After the refrigerant leaves the condenser, it moves onto an expansion valve. Here, it is depressurized before being cooled into a low-pressure liquid that travels back to your home’s evaporator to maintain its desired temperature until you reach sweater weather again!
