Why a Dirty Evaporator Coil Is Bad News

We all like to keep our homes clean and free of dusty debris, but there are some parts of the house that we simply can’t get to. The interior of your air conditioner happens to be one of these places that residents of the home can’t really access to duct or vacuum. That’s a good thing overall as inexperienced individuals may damage their systems if they tried to clean out their AC’s insides on their own.

The fact remains that sometimes your air conditioner is just going to get a little dirty on the inside and that can cause some problems such as a dirty evaporator coil. So why is this such a problem and how do you handle it? These are questions we can answer and there’s a solution we can provide.

What Does Your Evaporator Coil Do?

First things first, it helps to understand the role your evaporator coil plays so you know why it is such a big deal when it gets dirty. When your air conditioner runs, it pulls air in from your home and pushes it over the coil where the heat in the air is able to be absorbed into the refrigerant cycling through the system. Anything that hinders that heat absorption, such as dust and dirt, is going to hinder your home comfort.

What Happens When Your Coil Gets Dirty?

Over time, dust and other debris are likely to find its way into the interior of the evaporator unit of your AC. While this is normal, you do want to try to avoid letting the coil get too dirty because it can and will hinder your home comfort.

A build-up of dust, dirt, and other particles that collects on your evaporator coil is first and foremost going to impede on the ability of your refrigerant to absorb heat from the air. This will lengthen the time it takes to cool your home and force your home to work harder.

If your evaporator coil is allowed to collect too much of a dirty build-up, it can lead to additional issues, mainly a build-up of ice. This ice layer is created because your system is unable to properly absorb heat it ends up super-cooling the area directly around the coil where there is a collection of moisture and debris on the coil–the perfect environment to create ice. This is seriously damaging to your air conditioner.
